Following on from their win at the interschool EPro8 competition in November, GEIS’s engineering team was at it again in the Auckland EPro8 semifinals on 4 December at Auckland Normal Intermediate.
Over the course of two and a half hours, our students built two contraptions. Firstly, they constructed an automated toilet that turns a reading light on when you sit down, puts the seat down, flushes, and sprays air freshener when you’re done. After this they put together a self-propelled lawn mower which included steering. The team had some setbacks over the evening but finished strong to come third and book themselves a spot in the finals the next evening.
When the Auckland Grand Final started only 24 hours later, our team lined up against a very competitive field and faced another gruelling evening building a fresh set of contraptions. This time around they created a crane to automatically drop water bombs and a set of working scales. GEIS were locked in a tight battle at the top of the table with four other schools, all of whom were in striking distance of taking out the trophy. In the end, our team managed to secure third place, a phenomenal effort in a competition that includes around 190 other teams from across Auckland.
Congratulations to Amber O’Neill, Rosie Klimetz, Regan Morton-Jones and Bowie Rewi for all of their skill, determination and resilience throughout the competition. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work of all of our engineering students throughout the year.
As always, thank you to Mr Towl for your never wavering support, enthusiasm, and go for it attitude to provide our students with STEM experiences.
