Piha Mini School Goes to Goat Island

Jacob PriskNovember 19, 2023

Over the past few weeks of Term 4, Piha mini school has had the remarkable opportunity of visiting the Goat Island Marine Centre, guided by the Goat Island Dive & Snorkel team located up North.

Each trip has been a success—even with the occasional showers—and has opened up the eyes of every student. Personally, this break away from school has been both relaxing and thrilling. Despite my class visiting an entirely different bay due to weather circumstances, I believe that the experiences were very much the same; exquisite coral reefs, surrounded by icy cold sea water, and a large number of fish.

During the snorkelling tour, we even managed to see Eagle Rays sneakily swimming below us, trying desperately to escape our pointing fingers and excited shrieks. The cherry-on-top of this trip was that we had a whole hour of munching through a social-bonding picnic, which was arguably as enjoyable as snorkelling through the salty ecosystems. When I arrived back home after the long day, I collapsed onto my couch without hesitation from my aching and exhausted body. Now thinking about it though, it was unquestionably all worth it.
