As part of the Term 2 Science/ Inquiry unit on "Human Biology", Health in the classroom will focus on Pubertal Change and how it impacts us.
All students will be learning or reinforcing their understanding of Pubertal Change. We are having a parent information evening in the Auditorium on Wednesday 1st May at 7pm - Week 1, Term 2. This is an opportunity for parents to learn what we teach in our puberty health programme, as well as hear from presenters from "Attitude".Their presentation will include information about physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty.
The unit of work will provide students with the knowledge, understandings, and skills to develop positive attitudes towards the changes that they experience during puberty.
Topics covered are as follows:
Physical, social and emotional changes experienced at puberty
Developing strategies to cope with these changes
Basic hygiene requirements for a person going through puberty
Explore what peer pressure is and strategies to resist it
How the media can impact on body image
Identify people/organisations who can help in the future
The topics will be covered in class with your child’s classroom teacher. In addition to this, a question and answer session will be facilitated to discuss different body parts and their individual changes.
During these sessions, students will be split up into the group they feel most comfortable with so that they can ask questions openly and without embarrassment. Male staff members will run the sessions for the male anatomy and female staff will run the sessions for the female anatomy.
If you wish your child to be withdrawn from the class while a specific activity is being taught, please let Nicola Pitcher know in writing (nicolap@geis.school.nz). If you’re happy to share your reasons for withdrawing your child, please do so.
