Term 2, 2024 has enabled us to hone in and focus on core learning in the classroom. This term's theme is Poipoia Te Kākano Kia Puawai - Nurture the Seed, and it will Blossom. Across the Kura, this is focusing on the science context of Human Biology and the health context of Health and Sexuality with the growing and changing bodies and minds of our students.
Classes have begun their inquiries with immersion lessons within mini-schools that have each focused on different body systems. Mr Towl our Science director has provided teachers with resource boxes so students can engage with hands-on models of body systems. A crowd favourite has been the dissection lessons in the science room. Here students have dissected lungs and hearts (from the local meatworks). In these lessons, Mr Towl has talked about the different muscle types and helped students understand the function and collaboration of the lungs and the heart and how vital it is that we look after them. The human body context has also been utilised in our math programmes with measurement being the main focus. The link between ratios and proportions and our bodies being investigated is fascinating, and we are looking forward to seeing how students make these connections.
We’ve celebrated New Zealand Sign Language Week and created a video of classes learning ‘Pepeha’ by Six60. We shared this on the morning Cactus show. It was so great to see the school unite and learn this together!
