Gleniti Newsletter 9th June 2021
Last Thursday we ran our Yr 5-8 Cross Country. It was wonderful to see such a big turnout of parents coming along to support their children and the school. And wasn’t it great being able to run the cross country in our back yard once again! Many thanks to Nic Parmenter for all the organisation of this event. Nic already had planned the race for Ashbury Park, and then due to the big wet, flipped the planning on its’ head to bring it up to Gleniti. What a massive effort, thank you Nic. Our Junior (Yr 0-4) Cross Country will be held here at school on Monday 21st June.
We finished last week with our Teacher Only Day at Craighead School. Nearly 30 teachers and Learning Assistants from Gleniti joined with another 400 educational personnel from throughout Timaru as part of our Kahui Ako– Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary Schools were all there. We were very fortunate to listen to Russell Bishop, Emeritus Professor of Education from Waikato University. If you’d like an insight into what Russell is all about, take a look at this video featuring our very own Sarah Spittal interviewing Russell. It’s well worth a look.
Kea Crossing! Yes, that old chest nut! We have three amazing parents who help us out on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. They turn up every week, all the time. Because of this I can ensure that our teachers are in and around their classrooms from 8:30-9:00am to help support all of our students starting their day. It’s important that our teachers are doing this, and therefore I don’t want them to be rostered onto Kea Crossing duty. That’s why I’m so appreciative of the three parents who not only help children get across the busy road safely, but also provide our teachers with that time to be in their classes. With this in mind, I really would like two more parents – one each for Monday and Wednesday, because it is also important that I’m in and around the school during this time. Please, if you can help out then get in touch …. stevez@gleniti.school.nz
Congratulations to Sophie and Flynn who won their Under 13 Club Champs on Saturday for Cycling South Canterbury. They then travelled to Tinwald on Sunday where Sophie won the Under 13 girls and Flynn won the Under 13 boys Rolling Plains Tour consisting of 3 stages.
Today our Yr 1-6 Jump Jam teams are in action at the Mountainview High School Auditorium. Gleniti has a proud reputation when it comes to Jump Jam and no doubt today will be no different. There has been a heap of planning, preparation, practising, coaching and mentoring that has gone into the day. Thank you to everyone who has been involved in supporting our teams. Our Yr 7-8 teams are participating tomorrow.
Regards Steve Zonnevylle, Principal, Gleniti School
