Notes from the tumuaki (12 April 2021)
As we roll into the final days of Term 1...
We say farewell to our long evenings and start heading to bed a bit earlier. We are moving into wearing fleeces, merino or jackets over our uniform tops. We anticipate having more indoor breaks as the weather worsens. We prep our ski gear or clean out the fire and get ready for the winter ahead.
Over the past few weeks we have welcomed some new ākonga | students to the Tūī class - Abigail, Rivah, Max W and Max H, with Ihaka W starting soon. We also welcomed Arabella to Korimako this term.
🌳 Presentation to the Community Board
On Monday this week, Xavier, Hunter, Niall, Kate, Maxwell and Heidi attended the Lyttelton Community Board meeting with Mrs Rossie to share their research into the reserve next to the Community Centre. They learned that the reserve is not actually called the Hilda Frame Reserve, and that there are lots of details to tick off before a sign can be erected. It was an excellent public speaking opportunity and we are really proud of the students for being so brave and passionate about the reserve.
🦒 Life Education
As you will see, we have the Life Education classroom parked up on our court! It was really exciting for the tamariki arriving this morning to see Harold's friendly face on the side of the truck! If you were watching us last night, we had a bit of a mission getting the classroom onto the school grounds, so thanks to the Walker whānau who relocated their car to give us some more space for manoeuvring. Want to know what happens aboard the bus? Keri, our wonderful Life Ed kaiako, is running a parent information session on Thursday after our assembly - just wander on over to the mobile classroom and she will meet you there.
📖 Kids' Lit Quiz
On Tuesday this week, we have some senior students off to the Kids Lit Quiz at Cobham Intermediate. Quizzes are held in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Indonesia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand and the USA. Good luck to Orlando, Kate, Nydia and Blake as they compete against the other kura!
The winning team from each heat competes in a National Final. National champions compete in the World Final.
The quiz was founded by New Zealand quizmaster Wayne Mills, who reads enough books to write several thousand questions each year. Think you might have what it takes? You can test yourself on some of Wayne's questions by visiting the Question Bank.
🏊🏽♀️ Swimming success at Canterburys
We had two amazing swimmers - Isobel M and Flynn L - compete at the Canterbury Swimming champs on Thursday 8 April at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston.
🎥 Premiere of Climate Change video
This Thursday evening, ākonga and whānau from Te Kura o Ōhinetahi are descending upon the Lyttelton Arts Factory for the premiere of their music video for the climate change song that Kate and Sasha wrote. If you are keen to come along, please drop Angie a line at angie.rayner@governorsbay.school.nz to reserve a seat.
💜 Thanks to the P.T.A. for the Easter Egg Hunt!
This was a fun way to celebrate Easter together - and to raise money for three deserving charities, St John's, Save the Jetty and Forest and Bird.
