After school help Thursdays 3pm-3.30pm Working Bee
With our recent addition to the EnviroSchool whānau, Mrs Rossie is working with a keen team of Enviro leaders. Read more for one of their projects that you may be able to help out with!
Kia ora parents and whānau,
I am very pleased to say that we have become an Enviroschool and have a great volunteer Enviro-team with students from Years 1-8, led by Kate R and Saori C our 2021 Enviro-leaders.
Last year our juniors weeded and planted natives on the school bank. These natives are now well established, however, over the summer the clover and other weeds have grown back!
I have a large pile of old carpet squares that we can use as weed mat around the natives as they grow bigger. I need some adult volunteers who are handy with a sharp craft knife/Stanley knife to cut a line from the centre of each carpet square to the edge so that they can fit around each plant and stop weed regrowing again.
While the adults do this, the enviro-team children and I will weed around each native ready to put the carpet squares down.
I have pulled up all the thistles and deadly nightshade so it is safe for the children to do this.
Hopefully with half an hour every Thursday we will have the bank looking good by the end of term and when the weather becomes wetter the natives will then thrive and grow so that they overtake any remaining weeds!
If anyone has a spare long garden hose or surplus watering cans that we can use on Thursdays these would also be much appreciated!
If you would like to help us, but 3-3.30pm on Thursdays is not suitable, please let me, Kate or Saori know. Many thanks!
Ngā mihi nui
Mrs. Liza Rossie
