Hear from HSIE (Human Society and it's Environment)

Maria Doulakis —

Welcome back to a new term with the HSIE Faculty.

Teacher, student and parent expectations all play a role in ensuring optimum outcomes for our students, and open communication channels are important to foster this.

This term the HSIE Faculty has engaged the community to enhance our excellence in the classroom. Our boys will have the opportunity to collaborate with a real live organisation “Essential Need.Org” to help them realise their potential and responsibility as active global citizens.

Our boys will undertake a depth study on water poverty in Nigeria, seeking to understand issues that are vital as global citizens.

In our HSIE classes we strive to empower our students as ambassadors, leaders, and teachers listening and learning from each other. The boys are learning the importance of trying to find relationships among people and communities who live far apart, showing empathy, tolerance and understanding of world events.

The boys ponder on questions like;

  • what is my role as a global citizen?
  • How do I go about challenging ignorance and intolerance?
  • How can I get involved in the local, national and global community?

What an exceptional opportunity and experience for our HSIE Geography students!

Our students have also been quite busy this term polishing their vocabulary skills. All classes have been engaged in building up their glossary and expanding their use of vocabulary.

Vocabulary plays a fundamental role in the reading process and is critical to reading comprehension as well as being vital to language development. HSIE classes are all about supporting the boys to achieve their personal best.

A vocabulary activity in HSIE has been the Word Wall. This is where students enter the topic studied by composing an organised collection of words. These words are displayed in large visible writing on the wall. Students then have the opportunity to add post notes on the wall with the definition, synonym/ antonym and then to incorporate that word used in the appropriate context in their writing.

It's all hands on deck with 8HSIEC who have been busy creating their very own water cycle as part of the Geography unit: Water in the World. Ms Fourfouris engaged the class in this kinesthetic activity, bringing to life the water cycle. The boys had fun watching and understanding the evaporation process from their jars.

We look forward to an equally exciting term of teaching and learning in our HSIE classes during Term 2.

Here are some images showing our boys actively engaging in their literacy/ vocabulary lessons. Each student was asked to choose one of the key words from the word wall and after selecting the word they were asked to write the definition in their own words.
