GRCHC Sports Report

Mr J Derbridge —

Despite the year starting with some strict COVID guidelines, it has still been a busy term for sport.

The aforementioned guidelines unfortunately prevented us from being able to run our annual School Swimming Carnival. The guidelines eased in time for the St George Zone Swimming Carnival and we had four students nominate themselves to represent our school at Roselands Aquatic Centre on February 25 and 28. Congratulations to Haidar, Henry, Jerry and Jabir for their efforts over the two days, and an extended congratulations to Jabir who qualified for the Sydney East Carnival, placing 4th in his event. Thank you to Miss Fox and Mr Derbridge for attending the event.

We had a handful of students throughout the term take part in selection trials to represent the Sydney East region in various sports. We are very proud of Ben in Year 10 who has qualified for the Sydney East Basketball team, with games taking place later this year. Good luck!

Summer grade sport did not run in the St George Zone during Term 1. Instead, students participated in physical activity and games in cohorted groups onsite each Wednesday afternoon. These activities included badminton, basketball, fitness in the gym, handball, Oztag, mini soccer and table tennis. Students took part in these with great sportsmanship and enthusiasm… when it wasn’t rained out!

Fortunately, the Zone has given the all clear for winter grade sport to go ahead after the holidays, so stay tuned for results in Term 2. Other big events on the horizon include the Zone Cross Country, our School Athletics Carnival at the Ridge Athletics Complex, and the Zone Athletics Carnival towards the end of term.
