Languages Report

Ms Wong —

This year Hurstville Campus launched its premiere of Year 7 language tasters. This means our new students learn a variety of languages throughout the year, supporting our school’s improvement in literacy and numeracy.

At this moment in time, our Year 7 students have begun their journey with Italian and they will move on to French in Term 2 and German in Term 3. The end of the year will be crowned with Latin, which is embedded in both classical and modern languages.

This taster of languages should enhance student literacy and support students to attain greater academic achievement. By learning a new language, students will develop a lifelong appreciation of other languages and cultures.

Year 8 students are undergoing Italian instruction of vocabulary, pronunciation and culture. Students learned about celebrations in Italian culture through festivals, particularly the Venetian Carnevale.

The Year 10 Elective Chinese class is currently a composite class, made up of three categories: Beginners, Intermediate and Heritage. Our class is also working at a HPG level whereby the learning is challenging and extending our students.

The focus this term is on vocabulary relating to students’ personal world (for instance, classroom objects) and Chinese culture. The Chinese New Year was studied as it is one of the most important traditional festivals.
