Visual Arts

Mr J. Foote / Ms M. Rasic —

All Visual Arts classes have been working really well this term. The students and staff have developed resilience to survive and thrive while D Block was given a new roof and then a new dividing wall was built between the two art rooms. The rooms look great and staff were excited to move back into our classroom this week.

Year 7

In Visual Art, our Year 7's have been working on 'The Elements and Principals of Design' through a series of literacy activities.

The literacy activities have been designed to help them understand how to better write about art. In particular, students focused on the element of 'shape' by examining the work of Russian artist Kazimir Malevich and his artwork 'Suprematic Composition' 1916. This was further enhanced by practical activities, to develop their art skills.

Year 10

The highlight of the term has been seeing the Yr 10 soapstone sculptures materialise. The boys studied the great English sculptor Henry Moore and have attempted to emulate his style of combining nature, the landscape, and the human figure together in a homogenous work.

The unit of work has taken almost two terms. The finished artworks were completed to a very high standard, with the students having to work very hard to finalise the project. It has been physically and mentally challenging for them to visualise how the work will look and then saw, file, and carve away the unwanted material. I am very proud of the results of the entire class.
