Technological and Applied Studies

Mr Polyzoidis —

What a great start to the school year in the TAS Department. Student motivation is high and the ideas generated and work being produced would make any teacher proud.

Year 7 Technology Mandatory classes studied Digital Technologies. The students become familiar with all Google Apps and how all these apps interact to allow students greater flexibility and creativity in their learning.

Year 8 Technology Mandatory classes studied Engineering Systems, where they learnt about the world of engineering and engineering materials. Students worked on a Planter Box they designed and produced through to the final stages of construction.

In Year 9 Industrial Technology Engineering, students studied Bridge Design and Materials used in bridge construction through the centuries. Students worked in teams of two to produce a model bridge from timber. Students then tested the load capacity of each design to ascertain which bridge could hold the most weight and discussed the reasons why.

Year 10 Industrial Technology Engineering students studied Catapult Design and Materials used in catapult construction through the centuries. Students worked in teams of two to design a model catapult from timber which they tested to see which will throw a projectile the furthest, discussing the reasons why.

Year 10 Industrial Technology Timber students studied Design and redesigned the Universal Spice Device so it could be used not only in the kitchen but in a variety of situations such as a BBQ, on a boat when fishing, picnics and so on. During their investigation, the class renamed the project the Universal Kitchen Caddy. The boys took a hands-on approach in the design, with all students contributing design suggestions and assisting in the construction of the full-size prototype.
