Introducing our new Student Support Officer (SSO)

GRCHC —

Amber is a newly appointed staff member and the first ever Student support Officer at Georges River College Hurstville Campus. She will join the Wellbeing team here at Hurstville Campus and be working with students, parents, staff and the wider community to support student wellbeing.

Some of the key roles and responsibilities Amber will be undertaking as SSO will be working alongside students to promote safety, resilience, and pro-social behaviours, as well as being a key person for students to seek advice, guidance and support from. This will occur in a range of different settings, including one on one sessions, small groups or whole year group activities.

Each Tuesday morning from 8am Amber will be running the Breakfast Club in the Youth Workers room in C Block. This is where students can go and grab something to eat and chat or check in with Amber as well as their peers.

If students wish to see Amber other times, they can self-refer and have a check in with Amber and they can also be referred to her by the school’s Learning Support Team, Wellbeing team, Year Advisers, Head Teachers or Deputy Principal.

Why might a student wish to see Amber? Below are some but not all reasons for a student to wish to speak to her:

  • Bullying

  • Self esteem

  • Resilience

  • Conflict Resolution

  • Coping skills

  • Transition to year 7

  • Mediation

  • To be connected to external supports and youth services

…and more!

For more complex issues, Amber will make referrals to the most appropriate supports in the school such as:

  • Head Teacher Wellbeing, Principal or School

  • Counsellor/school psychologist

Psychological or intellectual, emotional or behavioural assessments with students remain the responsibility of the school counsellor. However, Amber forms part of the team who can help provide wrap-around support for these students.

Thank you to all staff and students for welcoming Amber to the school in such a positive manner.
