Reconciliation Week Assembly

Ms Joanne Stanborough —

On Friday 27 May GRC Hurstville Boys Campus held an assembly for National Reconciliation Week. We were joined by special guests Jeff and Cole Hardy.

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Our School Captain, Chris. R opened the assembly by speaking to the purpose of Reconciliation Week. Chris passionately spoke about Australia’s history and the steps towards reconciliation.

Our first guest, Jeff Hardy, was then introduced. As a proud Aboriginal man and former professional sportsman, Jeff learnt first-hand the importance of belonging and connection to team and tribe. Jeff spoke to our students about his personal journey of reconciliation.

Cole Hardy then spoke about his family’s history and protecting the environment. He showed our students Aboriginal artefacts, explaining their traditional use. Our students were captivated listening to Cole speak and perform songs.

We hope that bringing awareness to the rich histories, cultures and stories of our Aboriginal Australians helps contribute to an authentic approach to reconciliation and a more cohesive, informed society.
