Term 4 Sport Report

Jeff Derbridge —

The final whistle has blown on this year’s sporting journey, so let’s celebrate the progress and victories of our year in sport.

The summer grade sport season wrapped up at the end of Term 4. We had an incredible effort from our students, with all eight teams qualifying for the semi-finals!

We start with our Year 8 Basketball squad, coached by Mr Peckham, where both teams finished the season in second place on points difference. Our A’s and B’s were too good in the semi finals for Sydney Tech and squared up against the top placed Peakhurst squad in the finals. The B’s finished the season as runners up following a closely contested match, with a free throw in the final seconds proving the difference between the teams. The A’s final was a heated match and a strong finish to the game from our boys saw them end the season as premiers!

Next to our Year 9 Mini Soccer squad, coached by Miss Fox. Both teams versed Sydney Tech in the semi-finals, and unfortunately our B’s season came to an end in the penultimate game of the season as they finished in 4th place. Our A’s team, who led the regular season on goal difference in a three-way tie for points, progressed through the semis with a comfortable win. Their finals match against Blakehurst was delayed a week due to poor weather and was worth the wait. Their game finished 3-3 in regular time and required golden goal to determine a winner, which unfortunately for our students was scored by Blakehurst.

Year 9 Mini Soccer

Our 1st/2nd Grade Mini Soccer squad, coached by Mr Elms, continued the semi-final rivalry as they both versed Sydney Tech. Our 1st grade team held their own against a team of senior students and a single goal settled the match, which unfortunately was scored by the other team and ended our boys’ campaign in 4th place. The 2nd grade team’s semi-final was even closer with the game ending in a stalemate and as zone rules don’t allow extra time in the semi’s, a regular season place of 2nd for our boys meant they progressed to the final against Kingsgrove. Their final ended in defeat, as they lost 4-2.

Mini Soccer

Last but not least are our 1st/2nd Grade Volleyball squad, coached by Mr Polyzoidis and Mr Mustapic. Our 2nd grade team finished the season in 3rd place as they were unable to overcome a strong Kingsgrove team in the semi-finals. The 1st grade team had a fast track to the final, as their opponents could not a field a team for the semi’s. They came up against St George Christian School in the finals and were second best on the day, their runner up finish matched their place on the table following the regular season.

Volleyball

A huge congratulations once again to each of our grade sport teams this year as they demonstrated our values of respect, responsibility and excellence week after week. Our students displayed great sportsmanship and athletic prowess throughout the season, and we are all proud of their efforts and achievements.

The school carnivals not only allowed students the opportunity to strive for individual success, but also gave students the chance to earn points for their house, culminating in the awarding of the Champion House plate. To end the year the points have been tallied and the results are in… coming in 4th, with 590 points, Flinders. In 3rd place, with 591 points, Phillip. Our runners up, with 646 points, Cook, meaning that in back-to-back years our Champion House, with a massive 818 points… ENDEAVOUR! Another fantastic year from the boys in blue, as the combination of achievement and participation points helped them to a comfortable win.

As another year passes us by, we will not have to wait long in 2024 to see our athletes in action again. The School Swimming Carnival is scheduled for Tuesday February 6 at Sans Souci Aquatic Centre, with information about this event being released before this term ends.

Until then, have a safe and enjoyable Christmas and a Happy New Year!
