Science and PDHPE departments

Shane Baker —

Science and PDHPE at GRC Hurstville Boys Campus have been working collaboratively to deliver high quality teaching & learning opportunities for our students.

From the Science Desk
So we arrive at the end of Term 1 2022 and it has been a busy term with many challenges. Our students are to be congratulated for remaining diligent and focused while navigating the start of a new learning year, the end of COVID-19 restrictions and torrential rains. With the hope that this year is a return to a more normal routine, students have a lot to prepare for in 2022.

Science has now fully implemented the use of the STILE online learning platform in all year groups. This targeted, interactive learning tool will help students better visualise and understand the science being delivered. As it is an online platform, students are encouraged to use it both in and out of the classroom. If you wish to know more about the learning platform you can visit stileeducation.com or contact the Science team here at GRC Hurstville Boys Campus.

As part of the school BYOD policy, it is expected that all Year 7 and 8 students have their devices for all lessons. For Year 9 and 10, though it isn’t a requirement, it would be beneficial for students to bring a device where possible. All key information regarding the work and assessment in Science can be found on your son’s Google Classroom page for Science. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Science team and we will be happy to answer any question.

We look forward to a productive and exciting year in Science.

From the PDHPE Desk

A busy start to the school year for all things PDHPE with practical and theory classes well underway. Students are engaging in learning in and outside the classroom with the easing of some COVID restrictions.

Year 7 have started their journey here at GRC Hurstville Boys Campus and have been learning all about health and what PDHPE is all about. They have learnt the 5 dimensions of health and how they interrelate. In practical lessons students have been participating in a range of games and activities, focusing on developing their fundamental movement skills.

Year 8 have been busy participating in invasion games, focusing on developing students' spatial awareness and teamwork skills. In class they have been building on their understanding of the 5 dimensions of health to develop personal strategies to improve their own overall health and wellbeing.

Year 9 have started the year learning all about the characteristics of resilience and overcoming adversity, focusing on how they can develop their own strategies to support themselves and others. In practical lessons students have been actively involved in a range of net/court games, including a number of class vs class games of badminton and volleyball. Year 9 PASS have just begun their two year elective course and are learning about the different systems of the human body and how they relate to physical performance - ask the PASS students if they can name the major bones and muscles!! In practical lessons students have taken charge to create and deliver their own modified games for their peers to participate in.

Year 10 students started the year with learning about intimate and respectful relationships. In the practical component, classes have been participating in a range of modified games and activities. These are getting students to think in a more abstract manner, challenging them to transfer their skills and knowledge in unfamiliar ways. Next term our school will be again undertaking the Premier's Sporting Challenge. More to come on this!
