Languages Report

Naj Samman —

Bonjour tout le monde

At the start of this term, a lingua laboratorium was implemented in a classroom situation where a dedicated space for second language learning was provided as a facility to listen to model pronunciation, repeat and record the same to self-assess.

The overall goal for students is to become fairly fluent in the early stages of learning a second language. Students are wearing earphones and listening to digitally recorded lessons with the teacher monitoring pronunciation and fluency. This platform is adding to their experience of vocabulary, grammar and verbs.

Year 8 are currently moving forward with the Italian course and unleashing the science of linguistics whereas Year 7 are presently challenging themselves with what was traditionally known as the language of etiquette i.e., French, embracing both language and culture before they move to the dynamic German language and discover the 3 genders.

Both cohorts will be receiving their Language assessment task notification soon. The area of learning this time will be accessing and responding. Year 7 will be tested in the French greetings, introductions, and the French Revolution and Bastille Day as part of the Celebrations unit. Year 8 will be tested on the unit Family, Pets and Animals. This will also encompass the auxiliary verbs To be and To have in Italian. Both tasks will be conducted in class time.

The Year 10 class studying Chinese are continuing with the topic Family. Simple dialogues using basic vocabulary and expressions are key to their current experience. The students have practised role-play in the classroom bringing it altogether by interacting and composing with each other enhancing both pronunciation and meaning.

I have uploaded some snapshots of the language laboratory.
