Term 4 English, HSIE, Languages

Maria Doulakis —

As we approach the end of the year it is important to reflect on the amazing teaching and learning that has taken place in the English, HSIE and Languages departments.

English

Our students have been developing skills to enable them to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and reflect on their learning. Therefore, teachers in their classes are constantly adapting to a variety of forms of communication, interacting with a range of multimedia sources to explicitly teach and enhance student reading, writing, speaking and listening abilities.

A typical English lesson this term included discussion, viewing a science fiction film clip on sustainability, researching the context to a particular text, analysing and presenting various perspectives, listening to famous speeches and/or writing creatively and critically.

While addressing the necessary curriculum components, students have always been encouraged to enjoy the interactions of the English classroom and be reflective about their learning.

LOTE

Our Languages department introduced the Italian cuisine and its rich history. Our students engaged in the skill of speaking through situational dialogues. They learned to recognise Italian food, and to talk about food in the basic vocabulary form. Students had a lot of fun in setting up a mock café experience, as well as delving into Italian fashion, music and celebrations.

HSIE

This term in the History classes students undertook the process of forming an ‘inquiry’. The students explored human actions and achievements in a range of historical contexts, with a Year 8 focus on Indigenous cultures and a Year 10 focus on Changing rights and freedoms and the Vietnam War.

Our Geography students used their critical thinking skills to continue to build a holistic understanding of the world we live in through their studies on Place and live-ability and Changing places.

The Year 10 Work Education students had the opportunity to put into practice the skills they had learned in class such as, personal responsibility, persistence, active listening, teamwork, responsibility, patience and empathy into their real-life work experience week, organised by Mr. Mustapic. Students understood how important strong interpersonal skills are in the work environment and in their day to day tasks.

Year 10 Commerce students have been studying the school developed topic Buying a car. The content mastered in class will no doubt support the students with their real-life experiences such as how to obtain a driver’s license and buy a car. The students also refined their numeracy skills through the examination of data, graphing and learning how to budget.

Students in Year 10 Commerce actively engaged with their numeracy lesson

What a very busy and productive term had by all!

As we move towards the end of the 2023 school year, I would like to thank all of the English, HSIE and Language staff for their passion and commitment towards teaching and learning for our students.

I extend our very best wishes for the season ahead.
