TAS Food Technology and Woodwork

Mrs Cazouris —

From cheese and spinach puffs to Matcha crepes, read all about what the boys have been up to in the kitchen.

Year 9 and 10 Food Technology

This term Year 9 and Year 10 Food Technology students have been given the opportunity to cook once a week. Students have been enjoying preparing and making meals from Australian cuisine fused with multicultural ingredients and aromas. They have also been adding superfood ingredients to traditional recipes. This enabled students to understand the value of adding vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to spruce up what were once  plain recipes.

Their favourite superfood meal was matcha crepes. Students used matcha powder, which is a green tea powder, to infuse the crepes with antioxidants and give it a pleasant aroma. They then plated their crepes with ice cream and garnished them with strawberries. The students thoroughly enjoyed eating them.

Support students

This term SR1 enjoyed learning about Food Trucks in Sydney and cooked meals that were easily sold on food trucks, pop up restaurants and kiosks. Their favourite meal was cheese and ricotta puff triangles, using Mrs Cazouris' original recipe. Food technology students presented and served them to teachers who happened to be drawn to our industrial kitchen by the delicious aroma emanating in the corridors.

SR2 students studied "The History of Food in Australia" this term and had the amazing opportunity to cook with SR1 students. The TAS faculty believes in developing student leadership skills across different aspects of their schooling. As such, some students were given the role of 'Masterchefs' to demonstrate the recipes and assist their peers in making their own meals. A big thank to the Learning Support staff who assisted all students in developing their cutting and mixing skills, shallow frying and baking, as well as presenting their food on plates and cleaning up at the end of the lesson. All students did a marvellous job and took pride in their cooking.

SR3 and SR4 students designed and produced a multipurpose wooden box as part of their Technology Mandatory Engineered Systems unit of work. The engineered system program was modified and adapted to meet the individual needs and unique strengths of our students. The program was differentiated using varying techniques, tools, team teaching strategies and learning spaces to ensure success in every stage of their learning. All students produced a well-designed wooden box to take home. During their self-evaluation, students indicated they felt included in every step of the design process. Students reported a strong sense of achievement and satisfaction with what they learnt and created. Well done SR3 and SR4!
