Sport Report
Which summer grade teams will end the season as premiers? Which house will be champions of 2024? Read on to find out!
Fantastic conditions throughout term 4 enabled our summer grade teams to play the highest number of games we’ve seen for a number of years. As the regular season wrapped up, we had 5 teams claiming 1st position on the table, being our 8A mini soccer, 9A and 9B basketball, and 1st and 2nd grade mini soccer teams. Our 8/9B touch football team charged into the finals in 3rd place with momentum, achieving big wins in the last few rounds. Despite strong improvements individually and collectively across the season, our 8B mini soccer, 8A and 8B basketball and 8/9A touch football teams were not able to make it into the top four this year.
8A mini soccer team
Beginning with our 8A mini soccer team, coached by Mr Moore, this team was dominant in the regular season winning 10 of their 12 regular season games. They played Kogarah in the semi finals and defeated them 1-0 in a closely contested match, giving the team lots of confidence leading into their final against James Cook. The final was even closer than the semifinal, with both teams level 1-1 at full time. Extra time under golden goal conditions could not separate the teams and they were awarded dual premiers!
Year 9 Basketball
Moving on to our year 9 Basketball squad, coached by Ms Chrara. Both teams finished the season on top of the table, with the B team finishing the regular season undefeated. These teams defeated James Cook and Canterbury, respectively, in their semifinals despite a few injuries and moved on to the finals. Our B team were unfortunately unable to overcome a tough Peakhurst team that stepped up in the final. The A’s came up against Blakehurst and put together a great performance, winning 46-22 and ending the season as premiers! An excellent season and effort from these boys, made more special by a handful of them being part of the 8A team that won the competition last year!
1st/2nd Grade Mini Soccer
Our 1st/2nd Grade Mini Soccer squad, coached by Mr Elms, showed lots of quality through the season, with the 1st grade team also ending the regular season undefeated. Both teams were scheduled to play Kingsgrove in the semifinals. The 1st grade team were too good on the day, winning 4-1 and progressing to the final. Unfortunately, the 2nd grade team were unable to field a side on the day, and their season came to an early end. The 1st grade team came up against James Cook and maintained their season-long form with another clinical performance, winning 2-0 and taking out the 1st grade competition as champions!
8/9B touch football
Last but not least are our 8/9B touch football team, coached by Mr Foote. As mentioned earlier, their form running into the end of the season helped them to claim a semifinal match against Canterbury. Unfortunately, their opposition were too strong and took out the victory, ending our team’s campaign one match before the final.
All of our grade sport teams deserve to be congratulated on another successful season, both in regard to their skills and qualities shown in the games and also their sportsmanship and teamwork skills that were demonstrated throughout the season. A big congratulations and thank you also needs to go to all of our teachers who dedicated the time and effort to coach these teams throughout the year. We look forward to another successful year of grade sport competition in 2025!
House Champion
The last piece of business for this sport report is to name our champion house for 2024. These points are tallied up from the participation and successes shown by students during our sporting carnivals this year. In fourth place this year, with 510 points, Phillip. Just ahead with 514 points, and unable to retain the title for a third straight year, Endeavour. Coming in as runners up with 615, Flinders, meaning that our champion house for 2024, with 720 points… COOK! The mighty reds claimed victory as they had a high level of success and also participation points from their members taking part in all events. Well done Cook house!
Sport 2025
With 2024 wrapped up, we look ahead to the sporting events ahead in term 1 next year. Students in years 8, 9 and 10 will soon be able to make their summer sport preferences, and year 7 will be the first cohort in a number of years to take part in sport on Wednesday afternoons. This organisation will be separate to the rest of the school and more details will be provided in the new year. Get your swimmers and towels ready as we will be holding our School Swimming Carnival at Bexley Aquatic Centre on Tuesday 25 February.
Wishing everybody an enjoyable and safe holiday!
