Playing, Making and Creating!
This term in the Music Faculty; Year 7 have begun their introduction to music, Year 8 have commenced their topic of the Guitar by looking into the History of the Guitar. Year 9 are studying the music of the 19th Century and Year 10 have started their studies on their topic of Film Music.
This term:
Year 7 students learn the fundamentals of music notation including note names and lengths, time signatures the treble clef. Year 7 students have also been partaking in some practical lesson on the Lebenease and West African drums utilising the congas, djembes and darbuka’s.
Year 8 students have looked at the history of the guitar and have begun their practical lessons learning to play the guitar starting with the 1st string.
Year 9 Elective Music students began the year looking at the 19th Century Music, also known as Romantic Music. With a brief overview of this era in music Yr. 9 will begin an in depth look into the works of Franz Liszt and others.
Year 10 Elective Music students this term are looking at the topic of Film Music. So far, they’ve had a brief overview of the history of film music beginning in the early 1920s all the way to the 1990s and will keep studying from there.
The Small Ensemble this year has had an incredible start to the year membership totalling 25 students, as a result we’ve decided to rename the school band to ‘GRC Hurstville Campus Concert Band’. We wish to welcome many new players especially the year 7’s and look forward to working with them to improve their instrument playing and teamwork skills as they participate in the Concert Band. We look forward to performing next term.
Once again, we’d like to remind parents and students that it is never too late to join the Concert Band or start to learn an instrument, if you are interested, please see Mr. Wilmshurst for more details of how you can join one of the bands in 2025.
The Rock Band has also had an amazing start to the year with their 4 members debuting this year’s performances with one at the school assembly in week 8. We look forward to many more performance by the students in the Rock Band.
Finally, a reminder to all parents about the Creative Kids vouchers, the NSW Government based assistance program. Parents and carers can apply for a voucher twice a year with a value of $50 each. Round 1 for these vouchers are open for applications and can be used to support your child’s creative development.
