Principals Report
Welcome to another exciting term at Georges River College, Hurstville Campus! As we progress through the year, I am continually impressed by the hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm displayed by both our students and staff.
This term has been full of engaging activities, and I’m proud of how we continue to grow and thrive as a school. I would like to extend my appreciation to David for assuming the role of Principal during my extended leave and Jason R and Andrew P who stepped up. Your efforts ensured the seamless functioning of our school even in my absence.
Public Education Week 2024, held from August 5-8, celebrated the theme Proud to Belong and highlighted the diversity and talent of our school community. Highlights included Year 7 students solving hands-on puzzles in Maths, Year 8 language students exploring Italian culture through Café di Giorno, and Year 9 students creating a vibrant map of our school using traditional dot painting techniques. Meanwhile, Year 10 Food Technology students embraced sustainability by becoming “zero-waste chefs” with their delicious banana bread.
A huge congratulations to all the students recognised at our recent RoSE (Recognition of School Excellence) Assembly on September 17. Your hard work and dedication are truly inspiring! I’d also like to extend a special thank you to the parents and carers who attended to celebrate these achievements. A big shout-out goes to Mrs. Cazouris and her team for their exceptional efforts behind the scenes in making the event a success.
Congratulations to Evan and Ben, former GRC Hurstville Campus students, on being selected as the Captain and Vice Captain of GRC Oatley Senior Campus. We are extremely proud of their achievements and leadership, which reflect the values and hard work they demonstrated during their time at Hurstville campus.
I am excited to announce that after extensive community consultation and approval by the Geographical Names Board of NSW, our school will now officially be known as Georges River College, Hurstville Campus. This change, along with the new name for Penshurst Campus, reflects our ongoing transition into a fully coeducational environment. The names of the Peakhurst and Oatley Senior campuses remain unchanged.
As we prepare for the next stage in our transition to coeducation, our school is actively working on several important initiatives:
Staff from all four Georges River College campuses recently engaged in professional development focused on enhancing collaboration and ensuring we deliver comprehensive educational opportunities for both boys and girls as we fully embrace coeducation in 2024.
Upgrades are underway to accommodate our coeducational setting. New facilities, including separate toilets for both girls and boys, are already in progress and will soon be available to support our school in 2025.
We are also very thrilled to report a significant increase in Year 7 enrolments for 2025, with over 150% growth. This reflects the strong confidence our community has in our vision for a coeducational future.
On a final note, congratulations to Nisrene Kourouche for being appointed as Head Teacher of English at the school, she comes highly recommended from Picnic Point high school. I am confident that Nisrene’s leadership will further strengthen the supportive and caring environment we foster at our school, ensuring every student continues to feel valued and encouraged to succeed. I know you will join me in congratulating Nisrene, and we look forward to welcoming her in this next phase of her journey at GRC Hurstville Campus.
As we approach the end of term, I wish everyone a safe and restful holiday break.
Warm regards,
Kathy Klados | Principal
