Georges River College Hurstville campus library has had a successful school term. Reading interest is up, especially in the areas of the Olympics and wide reading. Renaissance reading has provided some interesting data in the areas of comprehension and vocabulary

The Premiers Reading Challenge showed an increased participation rate and Premiers Reading Challenge Certificates were awarded to: Gold certificate was awarded to

  • Year 10 Nathan D. for his ongoing support over 4 years.

  • Year 9 Eli P.

  • Year 8 Ibrahim N.

  • Year 7 Prachurjo A. Mathew L. Peter W. Sean Y.

The Halloween Scary Stories competition was won by Eli P. and Pericles T.

Oscar K. Year 10 was awarded second prize in the Years 7-10 section of the Sam Lewis Peace prize. He receives a certificate and a $100 gift card. His entry which evoked the theme: What does Peace look like to you?  was a very poignant visual presentation of his family holiday road trip to the Victorian coast which encompassed the 12 Apostles landform. He reflected on the tumultuous seas and the privilege  of being able to travel and explore the ancient Australian landscape  without the dangers and tragedy of a warzone.

The judges were very impressed and invited him to submit again next year

Our displays this term have covered topics such as Homelessness, Recycling, Remembrance Day and Peace. Social science classes have provided models of landforms.

Thanks to Ms McCowan for her care for students and the promotion of reading as well as her care and attention to the organisation and administration of the library and its collection
