Term 4, Week 3

Aaron Warrington —

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, he toa takitini. My strength is not as an individual, but as a collective.

📚️Kia ora koutou e te whānau,

Thank you so much to all of you that have created a fundraising page for our FOTs Go Raise It Fundraiser. If you haven't already, it is not too late. Details are below. We also have our School Disco coming up. Our FOTs are looking for some people to help in the canteen, again details are below.

This Thursday our country is about to have a biggest strike in living memory, joining teachers are more than 36,000 nurses and 11,500 other healthecare works with ACC workers also joining as of yesterday. We all believe Health and Education are the foundations of our society. We too often hear of healthcare workers and nurses being understaffed, working double shifts and patients not being seen in a timely manner. Let's hope our politicans listen, our tamariki deserve better.

Ngā mihi nui

NZEI Strike on Thursday, 23 October ❌️

We’ve been advised officially by the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) that strike action will take place on Thursday, 23 October.

The Board will close Green Island School on this day as we do not have enough staff to safely run the school.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

This strike is a historic first, as our school support staff will be joining teachers, principals, and Ministry of Education specialist staff in unified action.

The unions representing these groups are urging the Government to address key issues in education. Their main concerns are:

  • Investment in Education: A call for the Government to prioritise investment in schools and students.

  • Cost of Living: Concerns that current collective agreement offers do not match the rising cost of living.

  • Classroom Support: A strong need for more support in the classroom to meet the needs of all children.

  • Support for Te Tiriti and Te Reo Māori: A call for better support for these commitments.

As one negotiation leader noted, having teachers, principals, support staff, and Ministry staff all striking together "tells you how widespread the feeling is that change is needed in education."

Welcome 🙂

A warm welcome to Green Island School to Kriyashna Lal, who has started last week in Room 6.

Morning Tea with the Principal 🍵🍪

These wonderful students were chosen by their teachers for showing respect and good manners all of last week.  As a treat, they got to have morning tea of a chocolate biscuit and a hot chocolate in Mr Warrington's office.

They are such good role models of our school values, and a very proud parent moment.  Congratulations.

FOTS Go Raise It Fundraiser 🥠🍪

Our Go Raise It fundraiser has launched. Thank you so much to those who have already started selling. If you have not set up a page, it is easy to do. Click on the link https://greenislandcupscookiescroissants.raiseit.co.nz/ to sign up for a fundraising page so you can start selling and help us fundraise. We are raising funds to go towards drinking fountains, to install shades for the new sandpit, and, if we raise enough, some playground markings in the junior school.

Once you have a page set up, share it with friends and family.

After the fundraiser, Go Raise It will send you a report of your sales, and you can pick up your products and use that report to get them to your supporters.
