Term 4, Week 1

Aaron Warrington —

Nā tō rourou, nā taku rourou ka ora ai te iwi. With food in your basket and food in my basket, the people will thrive.

Kia ora e te whānau,

Welcome back to the final term of the year, a short 9-week term. A lot happened in the school holidays. From our monster 35, 000 people protest to ensure we get the hospital we need, to the most rain in a century hitting our city. These events brought the best out of us in Ōtepoti Dunedin. It is in this spirit that I ask our community to help. One of our families' homes was red-stickered. This week, if you have anything you can spare to help one of our own, please drop it into the office.

Finally it is with great sadness that I inform you that two staff are leaving. Sue Maskill, one of our long-serving Teacher Aides has retired. Thank you Sue for your dedication and service you have given during your time at Green Island. And Charlotte Ford our wonderful teacher in Room 8 is leaving at the end of this term. She has been successful in gaining a position at a Central Otago school. Charlotte you will be sorely missed.

Welcome 🙂

A special welcome to our new students - Isabella Downey

Library Update 📖

This week some of our new library furniture is due to arrive with more on its way. This term Diane and Mrs Newman will be ordering new books and our student council has purchased new board games to be used.

I am very happy to report over the holidays the Alexander Mcmillan Trust has given us $2,000 for library books. On top of that, The Greater Green Island Town and Country Club has donated $4, 443.03 to help with the library refurbishment. And finally, Freeman Roofing has donated $1,000 to this project. Thank you so much, your support is greatly appreciated.

Summer Sports 🏉🏐⚽️

Summer sports start this week. Click on the links for find the draws. Volleyball starts on Friday. Touch starts on Thursday and Futsal starts this week.

Uniforms will go home this week, a reminder that a $20 bond will be added to your school account. This will be refunded when the top is returned.

Lastly, I have included an excellent article from Friends of Football about letting kids enjoy their sport. As a passionate supporter of community sports, I have seen too many times a child's enjoyment ruined by bad behaviour from the sideline. Being a good role model and being positive are two of the key messages from this article. It is worth a read.
