Yr 11 Geography field trip

Seetai Barrow & Niko Barnett —

Tuesday, 22nd of September the Geography Year 11 class went on a field trip to Christchurch to learn more about the extreme natural event of the Christchurch Earthquake in February 2011.

After a very entertaining 3 hour drive listening to Bob Marley and the Whalers we arrived in Christchurch, and went through the tunnel to Lyttleton. We viewed the 34 hectare reclamation of the sea using 180,000 tonnes of rubble from the earthquakes and drew a precise map of the 34 extension of the port. We were generally amazed by the development happening here.

Following this we drove to Sumner to look at the damage to the cliffs and Shag Pile (formerly known as Shag Rock). Then we drove to the CBD and visited the Riverside Market for a quick lunch and chat with the local human inhabitants.

Following lunch we walked to Quake City and had a guided tour of the museum and some individual time to research areas of interest. It was amazing, interesting and informative all rolled into one, really demonstrating just how devastating the earthquakes were.

To wrap up our tour, we walked around the CBD and took in sites such as the new convention centre, PGC building remains, the cardboard cathedral, CTV site, 185 white chair memorial, the cathedral, Cashel Mall and finally Oi Manawa, Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial.

It was generally agreed that we had a great day out and learned more about the events that will help us better understand and explain our ideas in the end of year exam for geography.

Thank you to both Mr Adams and Ms Hamilton for taking us on the trip.
