Coast to Coast 2021

Sport Dept. —

Greymouth HS has TWO groups representing the school for the 2021 edition of the World Multi-Sport Championships!

Finlay Brown and Clark Fountain are in the two person, two day event racing in the Open Men's as there is no secondary schools section for this category. This is the second time for both of these athletes to take on the epic World Multi-Sport Championships, first time in this format as they took on the three person, two day event in 2020. Both athletes take on various parts of the cycle stages which total 139.5km, Finlay will be kayaking 70km down the Waimakariri River and Clark is up into the mountains running the 30.5km through Goats Pass. These athletes have been working hard with the assistance of many local adventure sport athletes getting out running, biking or on the water.

The team will be setting off from Serpentine Beach early on Friday morning at 7:20am, this first section of the short 2.2km run to the bike is a great spot to cheer on the two day athletes as they start their massive journey. If you would like to watch this section of the race please be aware that the road will be closed to all vehicles on the racing route (Kumara Junction to Jacksons 6am - 9am on Friday, 5am - 8am on Saturday). Please park near the Kumara Junction roundabout, by the cafe, or the road leading to the roundabout then walk to a viewing location - I personally love seeing the athletes run into the bike transition, a quick gear change then they are back on the road for the first bike leg.

The young 14 year old Callum Brown secured one of the popular ballot tickets in the Mountain Run event. This event sells out every year which is why they have moved to a ballot system for athletes to enter. Callum has had an outstanding lead up to the event training hard with some big names in the running world and former GHS students of NZ Mountain Runner Ben Williams, and amazing local talent Josh Komen. He is one of only 5 school boys competing in the run that will see about 230 athlete start the race on Friday leaving Aickens Corner at 8am.

It is fantastic to see how much support our GHS athletes have from the excellent Adventure Sport Community, many of who call the West Coast home. Although each discipline is an individual event having support with training is very important to having a successful race. Thank you so much for all those that make it possible.

We wish Finlay, Clark and Callum all the best for their events and will be watching closely for their checkpoint updates through the day!

If you would like to keep up to date with our athletes or anyone competing in the 2021 C2C please download the official Coast to Coast app (Google Play Store or Apple Store), search the athlete's name, race number or team name to find them.
