It is that time of year again when we have the good fortune to be able to reward two secondary school students in our Rotary district with a place on a J R McKenzie funded Outward Bound Mind Body Soul course. The purpose of this email is to seek school students aged between 16 and 18 years who would like to attend an Outward Bound course courtesy of the J R McKenzie fund. An application form is attached together with screening guidelines and scholarship endorsement. The screening guidelines are a good thing for the students applying to be aware of just so they know what could potentially prevent someone from attending

The three week course is being held at Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds between 28th June – 18th July 2023. Applicants must be between 16 and 18 years at the time of the course and must still be at school. The cost has increased this year to $5,795, however the Sir Roy McKenzie bequest will pay $4,025 for the successful applicants, with the balance of $1,770 to be paid by the applicant together with the travel costs to and from Anakiwa and the medical examination. Outward Bound appreciate the balance to pay will be a barrier for many people and will speak to each person about how much they can realistically contribute to the course taking into account the additional cost of transport to Picton and the cost of a Doctor’s appointment to get the medical form completed.

We are selecting two candidates from our Rotary district, plus two back-ups of each gender, should the candidates selected be unable to attend. Successful candidates will need to provide medical and other information to Outward Bound before they can be confirmed on the course.

The deadline for returning applications to us is Tuesday 25th April 2023 to give students as much time as possible to get ready for their course.

Late applications are unable to be considered due to the timeframes set by Outward Bound to confirm the applicants. I would be grateful if you could forward the application forms as soon as possible so that the students can prepare and return applications in time.
