Wellington Model EU: 9th & 10th August 2022.

Jenny Wilson, Project Manager. —

The National Centre for Research on Europe at UC is excited to be hosting the Model EU Wellington 2022 at Parliament on Tuesday 9th August and Wednesday 10th August.

Greetings from the University of Canterbury (UC) in Christchurch.

This event is open to all high school students from Years 9 to 13, with no previous experience or EU knowledge required. This Model EU will simulate discussions taking place at the European Parliament. Participants will be assigned a European political group to represent as well as a Member State. The European Parliament is the Directly-elected EU institution with legislative, supervisory, and budgetary responsibilities. The registration cost for students for this event is $25.00.

Concurrently with the student event, a Professional Development workshop will be convened for teachers, facilitated by Dr Maria Perreau of the Aotearoa Social Studies Educators’ Network (ASSEN). The workshop will explore ways in which the European Union may be used as a context for teaching and learning in the social studies curriculum. There is no cost for the teacher Professional Development workshop.

Registrations will close on 27 July and unfortunately, we are unable to accept late registrations. We are required to submit names to Parliament a number of days before the event, as well as confirm numbers for catering purposes. Morning teas, lunches, afternoon teas and pizza dinner/quiz session (on the Tuesday evening) will be provided for the students at no additional cost.
