Ngā Here Kahikatea Hāngī

Whaea Kylie —

Last week our class worked with Eli Maiava and some friends from Whare Manaaki to prepare a hāngī for our whānau. We spent Thursday preparing the Kai and digging our pit. It took about four hours and all of us joining in to get the mahi done. On Friday we went back to Whare Manaaki to continue preparations.

The pit was lit around 7am. We wrapped our Kai in cabbage leaves and then we lowered it into the pit. We covered the pit in sacks and dirt and then we made fry bread.

Later at 5.00pm we dug up the pit and our Kai was ready. We said a karakia together and then we all ate. With all of our whānau, there were about 80 people at the hāngī. It was a great experience for our rangatahi.
