Kia ora koutou katoa

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou

I thought I would start this newsletter with a copy of the post I wrote for Facebook last week.

It was my absolute pleasure to go and see four of our sports teams during Tournament Week; I wish I could have seen all nine! I started with girls netball in Timaru, then onto girls and boys hockey in Ashburton and finally boys football in Christchurch. After two years of no Tournament Week it is definitely a reminder to us all to take opportunities when we can! The students played amazingly showing great resilience and sportsmanship.

It is also so great that on the Coast we can work together with our neighbouring schools (Westland and JPII) to make sure that we had numbers for our Coast teams. The most important thing is our players getting out there and having fantastic experiences that they will remember for a long time!

Thank you so much to Maddy our Sports co-ordinator for her tireless work for all of the teams. To all of our coaches and managers, all of our supporters that could take time to go and watch and everyone else who supported behind the scenes.

There are still some games to be played for these four teams and others that are away at the moment (girls and boys basketball in Dunedin) Kia kaha! Check out Greymouth High School Sports Hub for more information.

Greymouth High School Board

At our meeting held last night, we farewelled and thanked leaving Board members Wayne Robbins, Robyn Verstappen and our former Presiding Member Shannon Gordon. We cannot thank them enough for all of their hard work whilst on our Board. They have been wise, great at questioning, good fun and most importantly made every decision based on providing the best education possible for our students.

We welcomed Adrian Perrin-Smith-Kahl to our Board who will be joining Jo Newton (Presiding Member) and Torben Fischer as our parent Board Members as well as Kiri Russell and Joe Mason. Our Student Board members Breagh Watson and Hayden Shand will be handing the baton on soon!

Heads up

Week 8 is our practice exam week. This is a good opportunity to allow our students to improve their skills in this area.

Thursday 15th September Pare Kore are presenting in our library at 3.30pm - all are welcome

"Para Kore is a national Māori zero waste organisation available throughout Aotearoa. We provide education through wānanga that supports groups, whānau and communities to design out and reduce their waste. Our Oranga Taiao programme includes presentations, wānanga, practical workshops, online learning, mentoring, facilitated support, physical resources, our time, communications and pānui. We work with marae, kura, kōhanga reo, whare karakia, wāhi mahi and events which support a restoration of balance with our taiao and creating new practices with our whakapapa and atua Māori in mind."

Week 9 is Pathways Week. Thank you to John deGoldi and the team for their work around careers and pathways. In mentor time students will be using their Careers Central online programme to support their choices for options for next year. John is working with the year 10 classes on option choices and he is also available on request for any students and their whānau to work with him. Please email him on degoldij@greyhigh.school.nz or phone the office and make an appointment to see him.

A reminder that our NCEA options evening is on Thursday 22nd September starting at 6.00pm.

COVID positive cases

Please continue to email the school office@greyhigh.school.nz or phone and leave a message if your children have had a positive covid test so we can monitor the number of cases.

A message from our PTA

We are a super cruisy band of parents, our monthly meetings are usually less than 1 hour in duration, we hold a couple of raffle fundraisers each year, plus we help out at the ball. It is a great chance to meet teachers and get to know the school. If you are interested please email the office on office@greyhigh.school.nz

If you have any comments please feel free to email the office at office@greyhigh.school.nz
