WCSS Junior Netball RESULTS

Netball —

Fantastic undefeated run to claim #1 spot!

The GHS Junior Netball team headed off to Hokitika to play under their new covered outdoor courts, this made for an excellent day with the sun belting down giving the girls much needed shade on a hot day.

This year the tournament had five teams competing in a round robin format with final placings coming down wins/losses and points differential if needed. Games where limited to 7 minute quarters meaning the team did not have time to wait around and had to get into their work quickly.

G1 vs Westland HS

The team got off to a very good start with 3 unanswered goals, then finishing the quarter with 4 unanswered goals making for a good opener to the tournament. A wee bit of complaintancy crept in allowing WHS to come back into the game ever so slightly. However, fresh legs and combination changes pushed out the lead further in the third quarter with everyone working well creating a combined 11 turnovers most of which our shooters slotted in. In the final quarter we finished with a 10 - 2 run putting a final stamp on our first game where everyone got some good court time.

Q1 10 - 4; Q2 6 - 5; Q3 7 - 2; Q4 10 - 2. Final Score: GHS 33 - WHS 13

G2 vs South Westland AS

Once again a solid start put us into a good position early in the game, leading by 5 goals. The second quarter was even better only allowing SWAS to score once and Hannah Kelsall was a stand out in this quarter being involved with four important turnovers at GD. SWAS were not down and out though, winning the third quarter and drawing the last, full credit to the SWAS side for not giving up! Our team had to have a rethink of their play and ensuring for the future games we do not take our foot of the gas if we wanted to win convincingly.

Q1 8 - 3; Q2 7 - 1; Q3 3 - 6; Q4 6 - 6. Final Score: GHS 24 - SWAS 16

G3 vs John Paul II

As always with games against our closest rivals we knew things would be tight and this game did not disappoint! The first quarter was close with just one point separating the teams, a good run at the end of the quarter pushed us into the lead by one goal. Second quarter we didn't miss a shot from our strong pairing of Dakota Robins and Ella Mahuika! Again just pushing out that lead slightly again but it was not a comfortable margin. Third quarter the shooters were on fire again not missing a shot and our defense worked hard to give them the extra turn overs which made our lead 7 points going into the final quarter. It was a very close final quarter with only 7 points scored between the two teams. This was our third game in a row and you could see we were starting to go through the motions to wrap this one up by the time the final whistle came around.

Q1 7 - 6; Q2 7 - 4; Q3 7 - 4; Q4 4 - 3. Final Score: GHS 25 - JPII 17

G4 vs Buller HS

In the final game of the day after a big break we took on Buller HS who came out firing. It was a high scoring first quarter and we just snuck into the lead 9 - 8. After a tighter first quarter than what was wanted the team came out to win 8 - 2 barley giving BHS any opportunity to score with them only having the two attempts. In the third we kept working on stretching the lead this time pushing it out to 10 points. The team was working well throughout the court putting into action some of the main things we had been training. The final quarter was our highest scoring of the tournament attempting 15 goals and getting 11 in just 7 minutes of play meaning we had a very high work rate! I'm not sure where the girls found the energy to finish this strong but they definitely impressed!

Q1 9 - 8; Q2 8 - 2; Q3 8 - 5; Q4 11 - 3. Final Score: GHS 36 - BHS 18
