RUGBY: 1st XV vs Westland HS

RUGBY —

Final round of WCSS Rugby Series completed in very wet and muddy conditions!

We were on the road to Hokitika for the final 1st XV game of the West Coast Secondary School Series. It was shocking day with rain coming down throughout the entire game making for a few pools of water on the field and players were covered head to toe in mud!

Understandably both teams took a wee while to settle into the game as they got used to damp conditions. We spent a lot of time putting pressure on the Westland team and about 20 minutes into the half Jak Partridge was first on the board for GHS and Griffin Thomas added the extras from the tee. Towards the end of the half Westland also got in for a converted try and that is were the game sat for the rest of the half. FIRST HALF: GHS 7 - WHS 7

It was a brutal game with strong defence coming from both teams, but this meant we started to have injuries creep into our side. Luckily we have great depth in our squad including Marty Rochford who came off the bench flicking off an INSANE behind the back offload for Peter Bradley-Kee to take over the line right in the corner of the field. Not to be outdone, super sub Rochford got in for own try soon after and Thomas once again added the extras from the boot - Thomas is only a Year 10, but showed his worth throughout the 1st XV series! Westland HS got in for their second try close to the end of the half to close the gap but ultimately left it too late and GHS took another WIN! FULL TIME: GHS 19 - WHS 12

With this win Grey HS WON the first WCSS 1st XV Rugby series not dropping one game. This is a very exciting young group of players and we are looking for to 2021 where we hope to have the Brockbank Graves Series be reestablished after being cancelled due to COVID this year. Thank you to Coaches Bermingham and McTaggart for creating a very positive atmosphere for this group of boys. We have seen a clear change and improvement in so many of these players which demonstrates how important sport can be to help people succeed both in class and in extra circulator activities for the school.

NEXT and FINAL GAME: vs Nelson College Boarders - Matt Gunter Memorial, Friday 16th Oct, 11am, McLean Park, Blaketown Club Fields
