From the principal: 2021 Week 4, Term 2

Mrs Samantha Mortimer —

Tēnā koutou katoa

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou

Welcome to Week 4 Term 2.

Hauora

The wellbeing of our young people is paramount to all of us. We would like to thank you for all of your support with our energy drink policy and your comments through Facebook and emails. We are looking into working with other businesses as well. Just a reminder that there are many health effects of energy drinks including high levels of sugar and caffeine. For example, a 500ml can of energy drink for example, can contain 20 teaspoons of sugar and the same amount of caffeine as two cups of coffee.

In terms of vaping and smoking we are working with the PHO to support an onsite clinic to support our young people and their families who need support to stop.

Cross country

I have been involved in many Cross Country events during my years of teaching. But I have to say that the one that Grey High organised was the best by a long way. Thank you so much to Maddy Crawford, our Sports co-ordinator, who did an amazing job. It was an afternoon for everyone - our competitive runners but also our young people who wanted to exercise but also take part in fun activities. The tug of war was a favourite! Everyone was supportive of each other and it was also great to see that some of our serious competitors joined in the fun course as well. Ka pai!

First XV semi final vs Darfield High School

On Wednesday we had our First XV semi final game versus Darfield High School. It was great to see all of our young men play so hard and although the result was not what we wanted they made us all proud. There is another game next Wednesday for third and fourth places. We are playing Rolleston - keep an eye out for more information.

Basketball

Last week I went and watched basketball on Wednesday and Friday. Firstly, there are so many of our Grey High students involved - it was amazing to watch! Secondly, I was impressed with the skill levels I saw. Basketball was always my sport and I still have a love for it!

Staff visit to Kati Waewae places of significance and the pūrākau that go with them

This Friday a number of staff members are planning to go to Milltown after school and are listening to Lucy Tonihi (an ex-student of MSA at Grey High) who is going to share the pūrākau that go with the Arahura River. One the way back we are going to stop at Hauhau Road and acknowledge the Parihaka prisoners. I am very much looking forward to this and will write about it more next week.

“Whāea te iti kahurangi - strive for success”

Ngā mihi nui
