Exciting NEW first year tournament for Korfball on the Coast!

We took a talented athletic group of students to Hokitika to compete in the first West Coast Secondary School Korfball Tournament.

There were five teams competing - Westland HS A and B, Buller HS A and B and our young Y9/10 team. This tournament was an open age group tournament so it was great to see so many players taking on this new sport and creating some great results. Games were 15 minute halves that resulted in a lot of running around for everyone involved.

Our GHS team was full of netball and basketball players who were very new to the sport only trying it out when Korfball NZ visited the school. However, the skillsets of this sport are very similar to netball and basketball so our students picked it up with ease. Check out how the pros play it here.

For Grey HS our first game was up against Westland HS B, that was also a Y9/10 team. This was a very tight game with GHS just taking the win 7 - 6 in the second half after a lot of back and forth play.

The second game was against Buller HS A that again was a very tight encounter with both teams finding it difficult to score points and GHS just took the win 4 - 3.

Third game of the day we took on Buller HS B, a higher scoring game with both teams getting 7 goals, however it was a stalemate for most of the second half with both teams showing some great defence and stopping the other team from converting.

In the final game of the day we took on Westland HS A that was their senior team and with the knowledge of a NZ Korfball coach who is a PE teacher at Westland HS she had them finely tuned with true Korfball tactics. Our team was not to be written off, they quickly picked up on these Korfball specific tactics and implemented them well into our own game. Westland HS took the game 13 - 6 but our team was really excited how well they played against the more experienced side.

The Korfball tournament was a fantastic day out and our students played extremely well! We are hoping this tournament has spurred on the interest in the sport. There is SISS tournaments coming up for both juniors and seniors in September/October that would be great to send from Greymouth HS teams to - if they sounds like something you will be interested in please contact the Sports Coordinator.
