The Tertiary Education Commission launches new Direct Careers Service

The Tertiary Education Commission is providing all workers and learners with quality information and career tools to support them through the COVID-19 recovery.

From Monday 19 October TEC are offering two initiatives to support New Zealanders whose jobs have been impacted by the pandemic get back into work. The Direct Career Service is designed to build confidence in job seekers and give them the tools and resources to take steps towards employment or education. The Direct Career Service is free for all New Zealanders and will run from 19 October until 12 March 2021.

Personalised Career Guidance

An over-the-phone service with a career expert to help people develop a personalised plan for the next steps they can take to get into a job or training. Individuals can call 0800 601 301 to book a session with a career expert

Career Advice Pop-ups

Short term face-to-face initiatives held in some Connected Centres and libraries throughout New Zealand. People can get initial advice from a career expert, get a copy of the job hunters’ workbook, and book personalised career guidance. They are still confirming where, when and if they run pop-ups across the Coast and will be in touch as appropriate.

Other support available to job seekers and learners who are looking to get into work

  • The job hunters' toolkit has resources and guides to help people find and apply for jobs
  • Careers.govt.nz has information and resources to help people plan their careers
  • Fees-free tertiary education allows eligible first-time learners to get one years’ study or two years’ training without fees, and
  • The Targeted Training and Apprenticeships Fund (TTAF) pays fees and compulsory costs for a range of vocational qualifications until the end of 2022. The fund covers all TEC-approved apprenticeships as well as diplomas, certificates and programmes in targeted areas.
