Young Enterprise Scheme Awards

Miss L Thompson and Miss H Wise —

Last Friday we came together to celebrate the business ventures of our Young Enterprise Scheme students. Throughout the year students have competed in five business challenges that have tested a wide range of enterprise skills. The top five teams from across the coast were invited to the West Coast Regional Young Enterprise final. Four Grey High teams, A&H Beerscuits, West Coast Collie Co, Ahurea Kari & Papatūānuku Sports Kits, were invited to compete. These teams came from the Business Studies and Conservation and Earthcare/Education for Sustainability classes.

Papatūānuku Sports Kits took out the top spot and will have the opportunity to represent the West Coast in the National Finals. These will be held online later this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. The team of Joel McKay (CEO) & Dominic Cate create sports kits (Baseball5 and Ki o Rahi) out of recycled materials with an emphasis on Kaitiakitanga. Their mission is to increase participation in minority and cultural sports in New Zealand whilst making sports gear more accessible and affordable using repurposed and enviro friendly materials. The team also received a $1000 business scholarship to Massey University. The team were also awarded the West Coast Trades Academy Community-Focused Business awards.

Ahurea Kari were also very successful - Check out the Ahurea Kari article in this newsletter to read more about their great work!

We are incredibly proud of all our Young Enterprise Students for their mahi and growth across the year. We wish the team from Papatūānuku all the best representing the West Coast at Nationals.
