The Land of The Moa

Susan Smith —

Senior Drama and CIP performance

Over the past two terms our senior Drama and CIP students have been working towards a performance of The Land of the Moa by George Leitch. This is one of the first plays written in New Zealand for a New Zealand audience and, as such, is a piece of history. The play, which is an old-fashioned melodrama, is set around the eruption of Mt Tarawera and the destruction of the Pink and White Terraces in the 1880's.

Our students performed the first Act (almost half) of this two and a half hour performance for an audience of staff, students and whanau and gained both performance and theatre form credits in the process. Our CIP (Creative Processes) students supported this performance ably by creating a variety of fabulous sets (Rata, Aiden, Florence, Elsie and Nova) and props including the amazing hat featured here by Paige (Year 12). There was also a lot of supporting prop and costume work contributed by our first semester Year 10 Drama students who also gained credits for their work (the bouquet featured in the photos was made by Maddisyn and Riley whilst Seth and Aiden excelled in their steampunk pistol designs).

The acting was a credit to the hard work and talent that our students contributed with some stand out moments from villains (Callahan, Rata and Jason), heroes (Jorja, Holly and Myha) and heroines (Lailani, Angelina and Charlie) not to mention a Scottish publican (Beth) with an awesome accent and guest appearance by Miro as a supporting character.

Congratulations to our Drama students and CIP students for a great effort, you can be very proud of yourselves.
