Year 9 Aotearoa Studies and Ngā Here Kahikatea visit to Arahura Marae

Lindsay Robertson, HoD. —

On 26 and 27 May students from Year 9 Aotearoa Studies and Ngā Here Kahikatea classes had the privilege of being hosted at the Arahura Marae by representatives of Kati Wae Wae. The main aims of the visit were to make connections with Mana Whenua, to gain knowledge and understanding of local purakau and to hear the stories of our turangawaewae.

Students were welcomed with a formal powhiri, a first for many of our akonga. Responses were made by our school representatives, before the welcome was completed with kai. After kai students shared their mihi and heard stories about local history. Students then travelled to the mouth of the Awa for lunch and then had the privilege of enjoying the stunning natural environment and fossicking for pounamu and other interesting stones. This was the highlight of the day for many.

Thanks to the representatives of Kati Wae Wae, the school student leaders, staff and students for making the visits a special experience. Ka mihi nui!
