RUGBY: GHS/JPII Open Girls vs Buller HS

Maddy Crawford —

First Open Girls Rugby fixture of 2020 was an excellent hard hitting game - Congratulations to both teams on a great game!

Our combined Grey HS and John Paul II girls have been putting in a huge amount of training with Rob Maitland learning those important fundamentals of rugby union. For many of the girls this was their first time playing rugby, but you wouldn't have known with how well they were playing!

Some comments from the 1st XV watching were "the girls tackle and play harder than what we do!" - you might be correct there boys, they girls worked extremely hard and it paid off for them!

Our team got in early though Losa Nusi (JPII) with a very strong run through a few defenders getting over the line, Sami Donaldson (JPII) made an excellent attempt at the conversion but it hit the upright. Buller got for try a few minutes later after some good phases of play and keeping the ball in hand well. Buller once again had the ball in our 22 and looked dangerous however some excellent defence from our team created the turn over on our line putting us on the front foot again. The girls ran the ball out of their own 22, Nusi once again showed her dangerous running getting through the defence offloading to Donaldson to go in under the posts, Donaldson converted her own try. Buller made some great space out wide with a cut out pass stretching our line and they got in for a great converted try. Klaudia South (GHS) got in for a try just before the break after a set piece scrum and the back line moving it through the hands.

HALF TIME: GHS 17 - BHS 12

The sun finally came out in the second half. This time it was Buller's turn to keep us in our own half and it took awhile before either team got on the scoreboard again. Nusi muscled over the line for a double today and Donaldson on the tee added the important extra points to stretch the lead out. Buller made use of the field width spreading the ball out to the wing and she was just too quick to catch putting Buller in for another try. That is where the game with stay on the board but the team continued to battle hard not giving each other the opportunity to get over the line.

FULL TIME: GHS 24 - BHS 17

Congratulations on a great game team!

Thank you to referee Rob Mailtand for officiating and to the AR's of Will England and Harry Shaw. We really appreciate you being there and allowing us to play these inter school matches.

Next game is on Wednesday 16th Sept, we will be splitting the team in two to have another run around either with 7s or 10s depending on numbers.
