Whare Manaaki trip

Eva Maiava —

On Wednesday 14th March 2023 our class, Ngā Here Kahikatea, went to Whare Manaaki for the unveiling of the new Pou Whenua. Our classmate Jamaal Henry, carved this beautiful Pou Whenua with the support of Mark Anderson. The Pou is named ‘Te Arataki Hinengaro’. They gifted the Pou to Whare Manaaki. Te Arataki Hinengaro stands tall, and is painted turquoise and brown. She greets visitors when they enter, and stands for the pathway of the mind.

Our class drove there in different cars at 9.50am. We arrived back at school at 12.25pm, just in time for electives period 4. When we arrived Missy Campbell did a Karanga, then Mark Anderson spoke. After, our class sang E Minaka Ana to tautoko their kōrero, then Jamaal recited a speech. Afterwards, our class performed the school's haka to show our āwhi for Jamaal. We all admired the Pou, chilled, and ate some delicious kai. We ate pumpkin soup, cookies, bread, pork bites, and other amazing food. We helped with clean up.

Later on, we formed a circle out in the courtyard. We all recited our pepeha, played a game, and sang some waiata. Once we finished we said goodbye, thanked all the staff at Whare Manaaki, and headed back to school. We had a wonderful time at Whare Manaaki, and enjoyed the kai, waiata, and supporting our classmate, Jamaal Henry.
