School visit by tertiary health science students to promote rural health careers
Wednesday 10th of May 2023
The Hauora Taiwhenua Rural Health Network is committed to looking at ways of improving the health status of rural New Zealand communities, and it realises the backbone to this outcome is a skilled, sustainable and efficient rural health workforce. We are therefore delighted to invite your young person to be a part of an exciting programme on Wednesday 10th of May 2023, which we have supported for a number of years – tertiary health students visiting rural communities to talk to high school pupils about making sure they complete their secondary education and perhaps pursue one of the many rewarding careers in rural health.
Many of the tertiary students fronting this programme will be from rural backgrounds themselves so will be highly motivated to reach out to young people from similar rural New Zealand areas, to encourage and motivate them and to give them a very real image of the possibility that they too can become a health professional of their choice. The tertiary students may be from various training institutions and disciplines and will be visiting your school.
During each visit, the students will give a short presentation to the pupils about careers in health, what it’s like to be a tertiary student and what pathways and opportunities are open to them. Following this the students will work with the pupils in small groups and engage with them in interactive workshops, teaching topics such as human anatomy, blood pressure measurement, reflex testing and CPR. This is an opportunity for students to try the equipment and learn basic principles in a fun, safe and interactive setting. In the past the pupils loved the chance to have a go and our main goal is to inspire interest and curiosity from them about study and in particular, careers in the health sciences.
