Level 12 & 13 Geography Research Field Trip

Mr Adams —

The Year 12 & 13 Geography students participated in a spot of potamology last week as part of their Geographic research into fluvial geomorphology on the New River.

We were lucky enough to be allowed onto a section of the river that can only be accessed by private permission, which enabled us to compare 3 sites along the river in quite contrasting sites (the overall aim of the research was to see if there were differences in geomorphology at various locations on the river).

Students worked quickly and efficiently to complete the research and gather useful data to compare and contrast sites. This was all towards the Geography research standard at both NCEA Level 2 & 3.

It was a privilege to take all the students out and see them partake in ‘real’ Geography, outside the classroom, in the field.

Shots from the photos show them measuring river bed gradients, velocity, channel depth, sediment size & type. The students will use the information we gathered to create a report that answers their research questions and that critically evaluates their methodology as well.
