Ngā Karahipi Uru Rākau – Forestry Scholarships

Emily Westacott —

Te Uru Rākau currently has applications open for Ngā Karahipi Uru Rākau – Forestry Scholarships. Applications opened 1 June 2020 and close 15 August for study beginning in the 2021 academic year.

Eight scholarships are available encouraging Māori and women to study the following degrees at University of Canterbury:

  • Bachelor of Forestry Science or
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) with a major in Forest Engineering

These scholarships are particularly popular with school leavers and allow Māori and women to study and start careers in the forestry sector, making New Zealand’s forestry workforce more diverse. Māori and women are both currently underrepresented in the forestry sector. The scholarships are $8,000 per year of each four-year degree plus paid summer internships so are generous in value.

Additional information about the scholarships, eligibility criteria and an application form can be found on the Te Uru Rākau website (teururakau.govt.nz/forestryscholarships).
