From the principal: 2021 Week 2, Term 2

Mrs Samantha Mortimer —

Tēnā koutou katoa

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou

Welcome to Term 2 week 2.

Firstly, a reminder that tonight, Thursday 13th May, we have Senior parent-teacher interviews going from 4.15 to 6.45 pm as Face to Face traditional meetings. You can also book to meet a teacher online from 6.45 to 7.15. Members of the Board and our Student Council will be there to ask you some questions around attendance. We would really appreciate it if you could spend 5 minutes catching up with them and giving us some insight into this important issue.

Secondly, please check out Greymouth High School Sports Hub Facebook page so you can find out more about our sports opportunities.

A couple of highlights from this week were:

Junior netball trials - if the students make the team they are going to play in the West Coast tournament in Hokitika 24th June and at the South Island Secondary Schools tournament in the next school holidays. A very exciting opportunity!

Three games of rugby on Wednesday (girls, under 15s and 1st XV). It was great to see all of the students playing hard but playing fair!

Our PTA meeting was on Wednesday night - thanks again to all of the volunteers involved and we would like to welcome any more members!

Kahui Ako

Wednesday last week we welcomed all of our Kahui Ako schools to Grey High to discuss what we as a group want for all of our students in the area to support them to reach their full potential. There was a really good turn out and one of the next steps will be talking to our community.

Check out this video to find out more about our Kahui ako here

Heads up

Heads up that we have an Accord Teacher only day on Tuesday 18th May for all of our teachers to find out more about the new changes to NCEA. School will be closed for instruction.

Professional learning

Last week I had the opportunity to go to Methven for the Christchurch, West Coast Principals conference. I drove over with the principals from Westland High and John Paul II. The drive, and the conference, were really good opportunities to catch up and learn from each other. There were two major themes of the conference: one, how to work with our staff on coaching and mentoring and two, wellbeing.

We discussed Sir Mason Durie's Te Whare Tapa Whā which I see as a cornerstone of what we do here at Greymouth High School. It is vital that we recognise its importance for all of our community and I see one of my roles in supporting this.

“Whāea te iti kahurangi - strive for success”

Ngā mihi nui
