WCSS Senior Girls Basketball Tournament 10-11/08/20

Maddy Crawford —

GHS Senior Girls take 1st Place in a tight WCSS competition!

Our Senior and Junior Girls Basketball Teams played in the West Coast Secondary Schools Senior Tournament in Westport on Monday and Tuesday this week. This was an excellent mini tournament for both teams to attend and they represented GHS extremely well. Due to there being no winter tournament week in 2020 the girls were extremely excited to attend this overnight tournament which squeezed 5 games per team over the two days.

For our Senior team this was a very important tournament as we are staking our claim at why we should be selected to attend the Secondary Schools Basketball Nationals in the September school holidays. Fingers crossed for these girls as we wait to see by the end of this month if they are selected.

With both our Senior team and Buller Senior team sitting on 4 wins and 1 loss we needed to go into points for and against, somehow BOTH teams finished on the EXACT SAME +120 points, therefore to split the 1st/2nd places it came back to the two games against each other. We just took the win because we beat BHS by 3 more points in the first game. Could not ask for a closer finish to the standings!

Thank you to Senior Coach Cameron Birchfield, Assistant Mathew Wood and Manager Donna Rae for your excellent managing of the Senior team. Thank you to Junior Coach Fi Ginivan on her preparation of an excellent Junior team, we hope they did you proud!

Thank you to Annie Cargill for her organisation for having this be such a fantastic tournament and to all the bench helpers and volunteer referees. Also to all those who made the trip to Westport to cheer on our teams, always lovely having that home support on the sideline!
