Greymouth High School Senior Leaders Attend

On Monday 24 March our Head Students Ryan MacKenzie and Aamaria Beal. Deputy Head students Elliot Van der Geest and Angelina Robison, Pūmanawa Bella Masters and Isabelle Maiava and Student Council leader Callahan Raynor headed to Westland High School with Miss Chantall Edwards for the West Coast Student Leadership Conference. Below is a write-up of the day from Ryan and Aamaria.

“A day of learning, networking, connection, leadership, and fun”

On Monday, six of our student leaders headed down to Westland High to take part in the first ever West Coast Student Leaders Conference. It was an awesome day of learning, networking, connection, and fun. There we heard from three guest speakers:

Ashley Cassin - Westland District Council Deputy Mayor,

Zak Shaw - Development West Coast Project Lead in Nature Economy,

Ariel Hodgson - Student Volunteer Army Programme Specialist.

The three speakers were very informative and all gave us some great tips on how to improve our leadership skills. They talked about how they worked on their own leadership styles, their journey of improvement throughout their own time at school. Isy said she “enjoyed learning about all the different leadership styles and student leadership roles within other schools”.

During the rest of the day we were able to network with other leaders, shared kai, and talked about what events and activities we all have coming up for this term. Eliot thought that “meeting all the different leaders from other high schools on the Coast was such a great experience”. After such an awesome experience all the student leaders throughout the Coast agreed that this conference should continue for all the new leaders to come. Ryan stated that “the conference helped to equip me with new skills and I left feeling connected to other student leaders on the Coast and ready to help create transformative change at GHS”.

On behalf of the Student Leaders we would like to thank Westland High School for hosting the conference and Development West Coast for sponsoring the conference.
