AF8

AF8 —

AF8 [Alpine Fault magnitude 8] is a collaborative effort to save lives by planning and preparing a coordinated response across the South Island after a severe earthquake on the Alpine Fault.

We'll be on the West Coast again next week with two public talk events, in Greymouth and Franz Josef, scheduled to replace the events we had to postpone back in May. Joining us will be A.Prof. Liam Wotherspoon (University of Auckland) and Dr. Alistair Davies (EQC). These talks will focus on the impacts of an AF8 event to lifelines and infrastructure – dates, details and links below.

75% probability of an Alpine Fault earthquake occurring in the next 50 years

A study led by Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington senior lecturer Dr Jamie Howarth indicates that there is a 75% probability of an Alpine Fault earthquake occurring in the next 50 years. Until now, it had been thought to be about 30%, based on evidence found in northern Fiordland.

These findings do not change the likely impacts of an Alpine Fault earthquake for South Island communities. However, they do reinforce how important it is for all of us to improve our understanding and awareness of the Alpine Fault so we can support each other to be better prepared for future major earthquakes.

New Public Talk Dates

We are pleased to confirm two new public talk dates coming up on the West Coast.

AF8 draws on world-leading research to help increase our preparedness to the next Alpine Fault earthquake. The AF8 Roadshow shares this science beneath our feet with communities around the South Island through a series of public science talks.

The Roadshow is made possible with funding from EQC – The Earthquake Commission. A large thank you to them and all our supporters – the 6 South Island CDEM Groups, EQC – The Earthquake Commission, Resilience to Nature's Challenges, QuakeCoRE and GNS Science, and our University partners: University of Otago, University of Canterbury and the University of Auckland – we couldn't do this without you!
