Trip to Tekapo - Earth Space Science class.

Kaleb Poulton, Year 12. —

On 26 May, Mr Tangney led the Level 12/13 Earth Space Science class on a trip to Lake Tekapo to go stargazing. While on the astronomy tour with the Dark Sky Project we learned about how to navigate using the stars and what lies beyond our solar system. The class took turns looking through telescopes at distant galaxies and the birthplaces of stars. We also learned about how stars are born, how they die and about how old our Sun is. During the whole tour it was around -3 degrees Celsius. The following day we all got up early and got ready to go on the Hooker Valley Track, which takes around 3 hours there and back. Once we made it to the end of the walk, we all had lunch and enjoyed the amazing views of Mt Cook and the Southern Alps. Later that day we went to the hot springs and enjoyed the warmth while it lasted and then went into town to buy dinner. On Saturday morning the class got up early and was ready to go back home. We are all very grateful to Mr Tangney for organising this trip for us. It was a spectacular time and will be remembered.
