West Coast Chess Regionals

Su Coutts —

Results

The second West Coast Regional competition was held at Grey Main School on the 9th of August.

It was an exciting day with a 6 way tie at the end of the 6th round. All our students played well with the GHS1 team coming first and the GHS2 team coming a close second.

GHS 1 - L to R - Molly Meek, Matthew Lee, Aaron Coutts

GHS 2 - L to R Samuel Sunny, Rylan Perrin-Smith-Kahl, Jack Perrin-Smith-Kahl

Individually, the competition was so close the rankings had to be determined by their performance rating scores for the day.

1st Place: Samuel Sunny

2nd Place: Aaron Coutts

3rd Place: Molly Meek

The top three L to R - Aaron Coutts, Molly Meek, Samuel Sunny

Samuel Sunny also received a special book by a New Zealand International Master as a top player.

Special mention: Jack Perrin-Smith-Kahl got special achievements of “Biggest Gainer” where he gained the most rating points, and “Biggest Upset” where he defeated the number one seeded player, Matthew Lee, with the biggest gap between Jack’s rating and Matthew’s seed score.

Good luck to all our players who are going to Nationals in October.

OTAGO MATHS COMPETITIONS

The Otago Junior Maths competition was held in April with the finals being held in May. This year we had students make it through to the finals. Congratulations to Seif Abozeid for achieving a Merit in the first round, and Samuel Sunny and Matthew Lee for achieving Merit in the final round.
